Austin Adams, CIO, JPMorgan Chase

Austin Adams has seen almost ninety mergers in his three-decade IT leadership career in financial services. But in his new role as CIO of JPMorgan Chase, he’s a key player in the granddaddy of all bank mergers—the integration of Bank One, where he was previously CIO, into a new entity with over $1 trillion in assets and a $7 billion IT budget. Here’s what Austin told us about leadership, mergers, competitive advantage, and what gets him up in the morning.

Cliff Dodd, SVP and CIO, Kaiser Permanente

Since becoming CIO of Kaiser in 2002, Cliff Dodd has helped launch a revolution in how the nation's largest HMO delivers healthcare. Cliff persuaded Kaiser to embark on a $4 billion-plus investment in digitizing the entire delivery process, including all medical records. We found Cliff to be not only a passionate advocate for bringing best practices to healthcare, but also candid and insightful about what it takes to get an organization like Kaiser to make transformational changes.

Ralph Szygenda, Group VP and CIO, General Motors

Ralph Szygenda should be able to rest on his laurels. Since becoming CIO of GM in 1996 he's helped the company achieve dramatic increases in efficiency, cycle time and quality. But with the current challenges facing GM, Ralph and his team are continuing to raise the bar. We found Ralph passionate, persuasive and determined as he talked to us about his models for business transformation, his opinions about the future of IT, and of GM.

Geoff Penney, Former EVP and CIO, Charles Schwab and Co.

Geoff Penney retired in 2004 from Charles Schwab and Co. after a 25-year IT management career at Schwab, Fidelity Investments, and Bankers Trust Company in London. We sat down with Geoff on the eve of his retirement and talked with him about subjects ranging from governance to offshoring to leadership advice for new CIOs. We found Geoff to be blunt and matter-of-fact about the changes IT is going through, but also optimistic about the future.
